BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, NOVEMBER 27TH 2013 (CUOPM) – United States President, the Honourable Barack Obama deserves special praise for his commitment to global peace and the recent Iran nuclear deal.
Winding up a session of the National Assembly Tuesday night, St. Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister the Right Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said the United States along with Russia, France, the United Kingdom, China and Germany have been “labouring under the most trying circumstances to protect the interests of the community of man, to promote peace and to avert war – a possible nuclear holocaust – whenever possible.”
“President Obama deserves special praise. Because you will remember that he entered the U.S. Presidency in 2008 having made a commitment, to the world, to emphasise negotiation rather than aggression wherever possible. To promote human understanding and to, whenever possible, avoid war,” Prime Minister Douglas told lawmakers and the Nation.
“As a result, we have today, important and promising steps having been achieved as the Western Powers and Iran, through negotiation continue along a carefully charted path of communication and negotiation, with the result that today, they are able to report real and meaningful progress,” added Dr. Douglas.
Prime Minister Douglas said that President Obama has lived up to the promise he made as a young candidate five, six years ago.
“And the Western powers, in the ongoing negotiation with Iran, have stood by him in this regard. He understands and indeed has shown that being a responsible elected official means being ready and willing – at all times- to undertake the demanding responsibilities of State,” the Prime Minister said.
The St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister said it is not only in these recent negotiations that President Obama has demonstrated leadership to attain global peace.
“We are reminded of his commitment to end the war in Iraq and his final withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan and steadfast refusal to put US troops on the ground of Syria during the prolonged conflict which started as the Arab Spring. We wish to commend him for this entire example in this regard,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
