(CHARLESTOWN NEVIS)-The Maude Crosse Preparatory School held a presentation on the morning of Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at the school’s premises in Charlestown.
The event was to present gifts and prizes to Master Carlon Tuckett, a Grade 4 student at the School for his participation in a recently concluded ‘COURTS’ sponsored reading competition held in St. Kitts on October 7, 2013.
Carlon, along with five other participants were vying for reading supremacy in the keenly contested competition. At the end of the event, Carlon emerged in second place, narrowly losing to the winner by a mere three (3) points. The winner of the Seventh Day School in St. Kitts amassed 422 points while young Tuckett scored 419 points.
Principal of School, Ms. Cherry-anne Walwyn, said that the young star has indeed made the school proud. Walwyn said that all at the Maude Crosse Preparatory School were extremely happy and elated with what Carlon had achieved. The Principal said Carlon was initially reluctant to enter the competition but was endlessly encouraged by his parents and tutors to participate. Walwyn said that Tuckett did everything to avoid participating. He finally succumbed to the barrage of encouragement that was given to him.
The Principal urged the other students to develop a love for reading. She asked the students to put away the ipods and pick up the books. She pointed out that Carlon is known to be a star athlete but has proven that he can also represent and excel in other areas.
In conclusion, the principal said that all persons, including past teachers, who have been instrumental in Carlon’s life should be highly commended.
Carlon thanked his parents and teachers for the assistance given to him on his journey thus far. He said that he was very grateful to the School and to the Education Department for affording him the opportunity to participate in the competition and he trust and hope that he would continue to make them proud.
For his performance in the competition, young Tuckett received an MP3 player; 1 phone from Digicel; a gift voucher of $ 175.00 from Harpers; a participation certificate and a trophy; a second place trophy, and $1000.00 for himself. The school also received $1000.00.
