Heavy downpours have resulted in severe flooding in Grenada.
Flooding has been reported in several areas, including River Road, Westerhall, Woodlands and in the vicinity of the National Stadium.
Videos online showed vehicles being washed away by strong floodwaters along River Road while students were seen climbing on top chairs at the flooded T.A. Marryshow Community College.
The Ministry of Education, in a statement a short while ago, advised principals, parents and guardians that the deteriorating conditions caused by flash flooding must be taken seriously. It said school leaders have been advised to instruct students not to proceed into the flood-prone areas.
The Ministry stated parents should go to the schools to collect their children or send a guardian to collect them on their behalf. It said: “Let us do all within our power to ensure our teachers and students are safe and protected from the flood waters.”
GIS Grenada issued a statement from the Ministry of Infrastructure, which advised the public that the Molinere Road will be opened immediately and remain open for the next 24 hours the first instance to allow people to get to the west coast. The Ministry of Infrastructure is urging extreme caution, however, since the road is unpaved. The opening of the Molinere road is being employed as a temporary measure because of landslides in the by-pass road through Mt. Moritz as a result of incessant rain.
Meanwhile, Grenada Electricity Services Limited advised about outages in relation to the inclement weather. Grenlec said its team is working to restore service to all affected customers.
The National Water and Sewerage Authority (NAWASA) also advised that due to the recent inclement weather, all dams are currently experiencing blockages, and it has received reports of damaged pipelines caused by landslides. NAWASA said these issues are impacting its ability to maintain a consistent water supply across affected areas.
Customers with access to water have been encouraged to store an adequate supply for essential needs until NAWASA’s teams can conduct a full assessment and begin restoration efforts.
Spiceweather 473, in a weather update today, said showers and possible thunderstorms were expected to affect the state of Grenada this morning. There was a warning for a low chance of flooding in areas prone.
