The Azores archipelago is bracing for impact as Subtropical Storm Patty approaches the Portuguese territory, with tropical storm conditions expected to begin tonight.

Currently located about 225 miles west of the islands, Patty is moving southeast at 13 mph with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.

Weather authorities have issued a Tropical Storm Warning for all of the Azores, as Patty’s wind field extends up to 205 miles from its centre.

The storm’s centre is forecast to pass near or just south of the archipelago tonight and through Sunday.

Residents should prepare for significant rainfall, with accumulations of 1 to 2 inches (25 to 50 millimetres) expected through Sunday.

Of particular concern are the dangerous marine conditions, as forecasters warn of life-threatening surf and rip currents along the coastline over the next couple of days.

While Patty currently maintains considerable strength with a minimum central pressure of 982 millibars, meteorologists predict the system will gradually weaken in the coming days.

The storm is expected to transition to a post-tropical low by Sunday night as it continues its eastward trajectory.
