In an uncontested election, Azim Bassarath has secured his position as Vice President of Cricket West Indies (CWI), the governing body for cricket in the Caribbean announced today.
The election took place during a Special Meeting of Members convened on September 20, 2024, specifically for this purpose.
According to CWI officials, the process adhered strictly to the organisation’s Articles of Association.
Bassarath, who was the sole candidate for the position, received nominations from the Jamaica Cricket Association and the Leeward Islands Cricket Board. CWI confirmed that all territorial boards, which make up the shareholders, were duly notified of the nominations.
Speaking after his re-election, Bassarath expressed enthusiasm for his continued role. “I’m excited to return to my duties for the good of West Indies cricket, working alongside my dedicated colleagues at Cricket West Indies,” he stated.
Bassarath highlighted recent successes in T20 cricket since he and CWI President Kishore Shallow took office in March 2023 and pledged to extend these improvements to other formats of the game.
The Vice President also emphasised his commitment to good governance. “I have committed and remain committed to serving with integrity and respect for the process while upholding the best governance practices,” Bassarath said.
The election saw participation from all Territorial Boards except the Guyana Cricket Board, whose absence was noted but not explained in the CWI statement.
Shallow concluded the meeting by thanking the members for their participation and calling for unity among West Indies Cricket stakeholders. This appeal for solidarity comes at a time when Caribbean cricket is striving to regain its former glory on the international stage.
CWI has announced that its next quarterly board meeting will be held on September 28, 2024, in Trinidad and Tobago. This meeting is expected to set the agenda for the coming months as the organisation works to strengthen West Indies cricket at all levels.
