On Sunday 28th April, the Nevis Athletic Stadium witnessed a huge turnout of spectators for the historic-first ever five-star parish Relays. Though it may not have been quite the Interprimary crowd, it was certainly heading there. The event was the brainchild of Mackie and Fayola Tross, in collaboration with Adelvin Phillip. They were also major sponsors of the event, representing their respective businesses – A1 Farms and AMP Promotions.
All five parishes on Nevis were involved in the event, and parish athletic teams were selected and provided with coaches. Each team was individually sponsored as well. St. Thomas’ Dragons were sponsored by National Bank, St. James’ Tigers by X-Petrol, Finished Touch, and Islander Water Services, St. George’s Hawks by Nevis Credit Union, St. John’s Mustangs by S.L. Horsford’s and Carib Breweries, and St. Paul’s Falcons by Bank of Nevis.
The athletes participated in various events, including the 4×100, 4×200, 4×300, 4×400, 4×800 and a sprint medley. However, the proposed tug of war was eventually abandoned.
At the end of the event, the final points were announced, with the St. John’s Mustangs declared as champions with 157 points. The St. George’s Hawks came second with 139 points, followed by St. Paul’s Falcons with 112 points, St. James’ Tigers with 95 points, and St. Thomas’ Dragons with 88 points.
