There was a devoted fan of cricket in Nevis by the name of Lucina “Mama Lu” Dore. She was famous for attending cricket matches and sharing her knowledge and financial support with upcoming cricketers. Even in her nineties, she would visit the ET Willet Park regularly, except when her mobility was limited due to illness. She was known for attending even the minor league cricket games, not just the significant ones.
Lucina had a close friend named Georgette Gerald, who lived on Government Road, but sadly passed away before her. Lucina lived to the ripe old age of 95, and she and the Harlem Shelter crew were known for bringing a troll doll named ZOLA to the cricket matches. The doll became famous among the fans, and there was a certain mystique about it.
Stories are told that when the Nevis team could not get a wicket versus St. Kitts, the Harlem Shelter crew would hold up ZOLA, and a St. Kitts wicket would fall! Lucina’s funeral service was held on Tuesday, 23rd April, at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, where she was a devoted member. We offer our condolences to her family, including William-ZUMBI, Jeffrey, Terrance, and the entire Harlem Shelter crew.
