Basseterre, St. Kitts: The Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB), held a successful walkthrough with high school students from throughout St. Kitts and Nevis on November 14.
Director of the Energy Unit, Dr. Bertil Browne stated in an interview on November 15 “We carried the high school students from both St. Kitts and Nevis to get a look and understanding of the solar farms at the ECCB.”

He also stated that the high school students found the walkthrough to be beneficial to them and were impressed with their engagement.
“In my opinion, the walkthrough was beneficial because it made students, most of which were science students, become solar aware and those students are future workers, and some of them would use this as an inspiration to go into the renewable energy field of the energy field.”
Project Specialist at the ECCB, Wayne Myers, was the person responsible for educating the students on the photovoltaic panels used at the ECCB.
“The St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) at this point in time uses fossil fuels to generate electricity in the Needs Must Power Plant and essentially what we are trying to do at ECCB is trying to reduce our energy consumption of electricity from SKELEC,” Mr. Myers said.

He added that “At this point in time, we have reduced our consumption of electricity by 80% by using a combination of renewable energy and investing in renewable energy products.”
Mr. Myers also explained in detail to the students the ways in which the renewable energy products work and completed the tour at the ECCB by giving the students a walkthrough of the campus.
