Empire Cricket Team Returns from St. Maarten

The Empire Cricket Club, returned to Nevis on Monday 3rd July, after participating in the Conquerors’ tournament in St. Maarten over the weekend.

Long-serving president of the club, Hon. Eric Evelyn, was on hand and assisted with the report on the games played, as he had also paid a surprise visit to St. Maarten, to support the team.

He indicated that the team played three games and won one and lost two, by slender margins.

In game one, the opposing team made the winning run from the final ball and in the final game on Sunday, Empire lost by about twenty runs.

Mr. Evelyn also paid special tribute to Captain Frankie Tyson, who agreed to transport the players and supporters to St. Maarten, at very short notice. The passengers all agreed that despite the weather, they had an excellent sail.

Team member Jelani Manners, who spoke in the absence of Skipper Adelvin Phillip, indicated that there were some excellent performances by some of his teammates: Javia Liburd scored a half-century; Reon Solomon was awarded a man of the match, in one of the games; so too, little Jaden Browne, in another and Tyri Jeffers took the catch of the entire weekend.

He opined that the experience was really great, especially for the younger members of the team, who travelled to St. Maarten for the very first time.

He noted that the outing was good for the team’s development and served as good preparation for upcoming matches in the ongoing local tournament.
