NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (June 15, 2023) — Students from three primary schools on Nevis were part of Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) in the Classroom on June 14, 2023, as part of the activities marking the organisation 42nd anniversary in St. Kitts and Nevis
His Excellency Ambassador Larry Vaughan, Head of the Regional Integration and Diaspora Unit in the Office of the Prime Minister, who accompanied Dr. Didacus Jules, Director General of the OECS and a contingent to Nevis, said the activity was held on both islands in an effort to engender an understanding of the benefits the organisation offers.
“The OECS Commission has been here in St. Kitts and Nevis and we are visiting the schools. We are interacting with the children now that we are celebrating the 42nd anniversary of the OECS. We are OECS in the Classroom and we are just enjoying our time with the children to let them know what’s happening with the OECS and how it benefits them both now and when they grow up, their parents and all of the islands, that from the OECS desk, there are so many benefits that we can work together with and to achieve, and so we were happy to be here.
“We spent the day with the children here on Nevis. We started first at the [Violet O. Jeffers-Nicholls] VOJN Primary School and we went on to St. Thomas’ Primary and now we’ve ended the day at the Elizabeth Pemberton Primary School and we were happy to interact with the children. Director General Dr. Didacus Jules was with us. He was interacting with the children, asking them what they want to be when they grow up and encouraging them that whatever they do the OECS will be around to help them to benefit, and so we were glad to be here as a part of the 42nd anniversary,” he said.
A number of other activities are planned to mark the organisation’s 42nd anniversary which continues on June 15 with a panel discussion to speak to regional integration. It will be broadcast on ZIZ Radio and Television and will be streamed live on the OECS Facebook page and YouTube channel. On Saturday, June 17 there will be a Fun Walk around Basseterre from Caribbean Cinemas to Frigate Bay lawn.
Sunday, June 18 will be a Flag Raising Ceremony to commemorate the 42nd anniversary. Later that day at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Sir Cecil Jacob’s Auditorium, the two-day 73rd OECS Authority Meeting in Basseterre will commence at 5 p.m. with Heads of the member states. That day signals the start of the chairmanship of the OECS Authority by the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew.
