USVI delegate to lead Democrats on Congressional sub-committee
US Virgin Islands Congressional Delegate Stacey Plaskett will lead the Democratic Party’s delegation of the Select Subcommittee on the “Weaponisation of the Federal Government”.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries appointed Plaskett, who made waves as one of the case managers during President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate in 2021, with effect from February 1.
The subcommittee was formed to investigate the executive branch’s authority to investigate US citizens and gather information, as well as its ability to obtain information from or shared it with the private sector.
The Democratic delegation includes Stephen Lynch, Linda Sánchez, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Gerry Connolly, John Garamendi, Colin Allred, Sylvia Garcia and Dan Goldman.
Plaskett will also serve on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
That committee oversees and studies the United States Government’s intelligence activities and programs.
Plaskett has thanked Jeffries for the opportunity to serve on the committees.
“My appointment as the Ranking Member of the Select Subcommittee on Weaponisation as well as my assignment to the House Intelligence Committee represent the first time a Member from a US territory will occupy these posts,” she stated. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Leader Hakeem Jeffries for his confidence in me. As he has so eloquently stated, his appointments to the select committee, ‘reflect the tremendous experience, background and ability of the House Democratic Caucus, and authentically represent the gorgeous mosaic of the American people.’ It is an honor to hold such a strategic position and I am eager to start the integral work of the Committees to which I have been assigned for the 118th Congress.”
