STPS Wins NCCU SJCIC Primary Schools Quiz Championship Title

CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS (Jan. 13, 2023) — The St. Thomas’ Primary School captured the NCCU SJCIC Primary Schools Quiz championship title on Friday [Jan. 13], following a keenly contested competition that was held at the Nevis Performing Arts Centre (NePAC).

The students: Mekhi Hamilton and Delijah Clarke secured 70 points, ranking among the top placers in every round.

The second-place award was presented to the Ivor Walters Primary School’s Tevon Wattley and Tanelia Browne who secured 65 points. Mahira Hanley and Zoria Chapman of the Charlestown Primary School placed third with 60 points.

The other participating schools were St. James Primary – represented by Teja Mills and Alandre Huggins; Joycelyn Liburd Primary – represented by Azarius Hendrickson and Devondre Archibald; and Elizabeth Pemberton Primary – represented by Kiyan Blake and Saheim Pemberton.

The students competed in four rounds: Language Arts, Science, Social Studies – which focused on their knowledge of the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union (NCCU) – and Mathematics.

Director of the NCCU, Dwight Morton chaired the opening ceremony and noted that “this activity was one activity that was organised by the Nevis Co-operative Credit Union as part of its 50th anniversary.”

He reminded that “the Credit Union was started in 1972”. Morton advised that the event had to be postponed “due to a number of factors.”

Halstead Byron, in delivering remarks in his capacity as First President of the St. John’s Community Improvement Club (SJCIC), thanked the Department of Education its blessing and partnership.

Byron pledged the SJCIC’s commitment to working with the Department of Education and the NCCU to ensure that the quiz becomes an annual event, once again.

The NCCU SJCIC Primary Schools Quiz formed part of activities to mark the 50th anniversary of the NCCU, which began operating under its current name on July 25, 1972.
