Tropical Storm Fiona formed in the Atlantic

MIAMI – Tropical Storm Fiona, which officially formed as the season’s sixth named system on Atlantic Wednesday night, prompted watches in parts of the Leeward Islands.

According to Thursday’s bulletin from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) at 1 a.m. ET, Tropical Storm Fiona was located about 625 miles east of Leeward Island with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph, while 14 miles to the west-northwest. was running at an hourly rate.

Fiona is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 3 to 5 inches, with a maximum total of 8 inches over the northern Leeward Islands, the British and US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and eastern Hispaniola. These rains can cause different landslides in different areas as well as different flashes and urban flooding.

The Dutch government has issued a tropical storm watch for Sabah and Sint Eustatius. The Government of Saint Maarten has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Saint Maarten. The government of Antigua has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Montserrat, Antigua, Barbuda, Saint Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla Island.
