Nationals from the twin islands of Antigua and Barbuda, along with the Antigua and Barbuda Progressive Society, INC, celebrated the posthumous co-naming of the corner of 122 Street and Lenox Ave/Malcolm X Blvd, in honour of the late Bishop James P. Roberts, Sr.
The street has been co-named Bishop James P. Roberts, Sr Way.
Roberts Sr, who settled in Harlem with his mother and sister after migrating to the USA, was a strong advocate for blacks and migrant communities. He believed in racial equality and self-determination, which attracted him to Marcus Garvey’s UNIA in 1917.
In 1934, along with 22 of his fellow Antiguans, they established the Antigua and Barbuda Progressive Society, Inc, to provide charitable assistance for the social and intellectual needs of the Harlem community and his beloved Antigua.
