A contingent of Nevisian athletes returned home to a warm welcome, on the evening of Tuesday 11th June, after competing in the Whitsuntide meet in Grenada, over the last weekend.
They arrived at the Charlestown pier, sometime after 10 pm and were warmly greeted by the Minister of Sports, Hon. Eric Evelyn; Hon. Spencer Brand and Lady Brand; Legal Advisor, Mrs. Helen Lewis and several parents and siblings.
In a brief ceremony, ably chaired by Director of Sports, Mr. Jamir Claxton, he used the opportunity to thank the Nevis Island Administration and the other sponsors for assisting the athletes in making the trip.
He lauded all of the athletes, who he stated performed creditably and announced the medal returns as follows:
Alexander Caines-silver -1500 meters under 17 boys and Bronze in the under 17 boys 800 meters
Kamarley Newton-silver- 200 meters under 17 boys
Queleel Roberts- bronze- under 17 boys 200 meters
Laquania Daniel–bronze- female open shotput
D’Atryel Stanley- silver-400 meters under 20 boys Team Nevis- Bronze medal in the 4×400 open males
Team Nevis- Gold medal 4X100 meters relay for males
Hon. Eric Evelyn noted that he and his cabinet colleagues, will continue to invest in the youths and pointed to the fact that the athletes now have a first class Mondo facility, where they can practise and develop their skills.
He congratulated them on their outstanding performance and told them to keep training, as there are greater things in the offing.
Hon. Spencer Brand for his part, stated that his CCM administration is a caring government and told the athletes that this is only a glimpse of what can be achieved, if they put in the hard work.
