Charlestown-Nevis– Horns blared loudly; flags were waved and the DJ blasted out the popular DJ Bravo’s song ‘Champion’!
This was all a part of the humongous welcome received by the Nevisian debaters as they returned home from Antigua on Monday afternoon-4th March.
They were met by an impressive delegation, which included, Hon. Troy Liburd-Minister of Education; Hon. Hazel Brandy- Williams; Hon. Eric Evelyn; Hon. Spencer Brand; Cabinet Secretary, Mr. Stedmond Tross; Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education-Mr. Kevin Barrett and Principal Education Officer-Miss Zahnela Claxton.
Add to that parents, siblings, friends and a hosts of teachers and students from the Nevis Sixth Form College and the Charlestown Secondary School.
The debaters and their entourage made a grand arrival, as they came via two speed boats-one with the debaters on board and the other with the support team.
A brief ceremony ensured, which was ably chaired by PS Barrett and remarks were delivered by Hon. Troy Liburd, who congratulated the debating team for their marvelous achievement and promised that he will consult with Premier Brantley and his cabinet colleagues, to arrange something really special, to celebrate the team.
Miss Jeriella Liburd, the President of the debating society, gave a brief response and thanked all who had assisted the team on their victorious journey
She lauded the debaters and the entire support team for beating Antigua in the finals of the annual Leeward Islands debate, held on that island over the last weekend.
Nevis not only won the competition, but effectively set a new record by winning the competition for the last three consecutive years—three-peat!
After the brief ceremony, the debating team was heartily toasted and quite a fair number of the huge gathering remained to enjoy the sweet strains of the DJ and the melodious voice of ‘Tebulous’, as he sang his popular tune ‘Celebrate.’
