Charlestown-Nevis-Headmistress at the Nevis International Secondary School, Miss Joy Napier is elated over the fact that her school won the recently held culinary competition which featured all three secondary schools on Nevis.
‘We are a very small school and our students did us really proud,’ she stated.
The competition was held on Thursday 24th May, and was part of the activities that signaled the official opening of the Artisans Village, situated at Pinney’s Estate.
The other schools represented in the competition were: The Charlestown Secondary School and the Gingerland Secondary School.
The basic guidelines for the competition included the following:
- Three students represented each school
- Students were required to prepare a two course meal; an entrée and a dessert. A mystery basket was also provided from which the students had to prepare the entrée, which must have comprised of protein, starch and a vegetable.
- Plantain was the featured vegetable for the contest
- The dessert was due to be prepared prior to the day of the competition
- The criteria included: Presentation, taste and originality
The students were seen busily doing their preparations under an open tent, all neatly dressed in their aprons and caps.
They then retired to a private kitchen to complete the cooking of the various dishes, all the while being carefully monitored by the judges.
At the end of the day, when the judges would have completed their assessments, the following placements were announced:
Winner: The Nevis International Secondary School
Second place-Charlestown Secondary School
Third Place-Gingerland Secondary School.
The students representing the Nevis International Secondary school were: Brightye Brown; Shantel Brown and Ebony Liburd.
They won for their school, a spanking new micro wave oven and $1,000.00 and were also able to take home a personal prize of $150.00 each, along with the winner’s trophies.
