Scores of individuals showed up at the Flats in Cole Hill on Friday 30th March-Good Friday, to witness the annual Kite flying competition, hosted by the St. John’s Community Improvement Club (SJCIC).
The competition now in its 32nd year, is mainly geared towards retaining the age old tradition of kite making and kite flying and to pass on the art form from generation to generation.
Among the many individuals attending the family oriented activity, was Minister of Sports, Hon. Eric Evelyn, who lauded the SJCIC club members for their noble effort in maintain the tradition for so many years.
He was also impressed with the creativity and variety of kites on display.
He was particularly impressed by one kite, which was clearly marked: ‘It’s a tie-JLPS (In purple) and CPS (in orange).
A clear reference to the recent unprecedented tie between the Charlestown Primary School and the Joycelyn Liburd Primary school, at the recently held interprimary schools’ athletic championship.
Unfortunately, the kite was not able to compete for the most creative kite prize, as it did not stay in the air, for the required minimum of two minutes.
Throughout the day, there was music, traditional delicacies, such as conkie; potato pudding; jelly water; sarsaparilla and much more.
Those not interested in Kite flying, tried their hands at Dominoes.
When the judges had concluded their assessment of the 16 registered kites, the results were as follows:
