Paradise Beach T-20 Explosion Off To A Rollicking Start

By Curtis Morton

There was much excitement for Cricket lovers at the ET Willet Park, over the last weekend.

This, as the Paradise Beach T-20 tournament, commenced.

The action started at the ET Willet Park, on Saturday 17th March, with a friendly encounter between Calypso Cricket and a visiting English touring team.

Calypso Cricket won that encounter.

Then the real action began, as the local franchise tournament, sponsored in the main, by Paradise Beach Resort, commenced.

In match one, High Voltage, captained by Tonito Willet, engaged Big Rock.

Zavero Forbes, played the innings of his life, when he smashed 81 not out in only 31 balls, to lead the High Voltage to an imposing total.

Big Rock could only muster a whisper of a response and succumbed for just 107 all out.

Summarized scores: High Voltage: 191 for 5 in 20 overs: Zavero Forbes 81*; Duane Webbe 48; Saeed Williams 33; Kejel Tyson 18

Bhim; Subramani and Persaud 1 wicket each

Big Rock: 107 all out in 16.1 overs: Bhim 32; Hinds 28

Tonito Willet 4 for 13; Carmichael 3 for 22; Sharma 2 for 27

High Voltage won by 84 runs.

Match two was a virtual nail biter and was played between Smashers, captained by Adelvin Phillip and Super Sixers captained by Jason Campbell.

Smashers batted first and got to 139 all out in 19.5 overs and there was much doubt around the Park, as to whether or not that total would be sufficient to ward off the Super Sixers.

The Super Sixers seemed well set and comfortably placed at 115 for 2 in over number 17 and somebody indicated that the proverbial fat lady, was already walking through the Park.

However, this funny, old game of cricket, never ceases to amaze its viewers.

From 115 for 2, the Super Sixers, catapulted to 137 for 7, when the final delivery was bowled.

It came down to 9 runs required off the final over and this was entrusted to Wasim BOOM-BOOM Mintos.

He removed Jason Campbell with his first delivery and the next two balls were dots.

He removed Nelson Boland with his fourth, caught on the deep midwicket boundary and that made it 9 runs required from two deliveries.

Rohan Laborde, smashed the fifth delivery over long on for six and Super Sixers were back in the game.

There was electricity all around the ET Willet Park.

Three runs required from one ball for a win; two runs would tie the scores and force a super over.

Laborde swung wildly. Had he connected, the ball may have landed in Montserrat. However, it thudded into his pads and he was sent on his way.

Smashers winning by a mere two runs and man of the match Wasim Mintos celebrated in grand style with his unique BOOM-BOOM roll.

Summarized scores: Smashers 139 all out in 19.5 overs: Javani Tyson 32; S. Jeffers 24; Javia Liburd 15

Trishawn Francis 4 for 28; Theron Bussue 2 for 25

Super Sixers 137 for 7 in 20 overs: Ross Powell 41; Andre Browne 40; Jamie Cornelius 28

Wasim Mintos 4 for 27

Smashers won by 2 runs
