A promise made-a promise kept. Football chief on Nevis, Rohan Isles stated on the evening of Saturday 29th October that the local Football season would commence on that day and pointed to the fact that the season was indeed commencing as promised.
He noted that there was no particular fanfare to the opening, as there was not the traditional opening ceremony.
‘We will have a gala and awards dinner at the end of the season to celebrate with the successful teams and players,’ promised Isles.
In match one played on Saturday night, the SL Horsfords Highlights engaged the youthful team, Youths of the Future, otherwise known as ‘Shango’s team.’
The youths held their own during the early exchanges, but as the more experienced Newcastle players piled on the pressure, the youngsters wilted and at the end of the final whistle, the score line was 2 goals to nil in favour of the SL Horsfords Highlights team.
On Sunday 30th October, CCC Bath United engaged Bronx United.
The early exchanges were very entertaining and Bath capitalized on a defensive error to sink the first goal within the first ten minutes of the encounter.
However, Bronx responded almost immediately, with a super goal from the boot of Shaheed Tyson, who really had minimum room to play with, as he sizzled one from the far corner and somehow found the back of the net.
The game turned sour after an incident which involved one of the Bath strikers impacting the Bronx goalie. It is understood that the young goalkeeper was taken to the hospital and received some stiches to deal with his injury.
Thereafter, Bath ruled supreme and at the end of the final whistle, the scoreline was: CCC Bath United 8 Bronx United 3.
